Acts 10:43
Context:In Acts 10, we find the account of Cornelius, a Roman centurion who was a devout and God-fearing man. In a vision, an angel of God instructed Cornelius to send for the apostle Peter, who was staying in Joppa. Meanwhile, Peter also received a vision from God, revealing to him that he should not consider any person as common or unclean. As Cornelius’ messengers arrived, Peter went with them to Caesarea, where Cornelius eagerly awaited his arrival. Acts 10:43 is part of Peter’s message to Cornelius and his household.
Give all the prophets witness:Peter is emphasising that the message of salvation through Jesus Christ is not a novel concept introduced in that particular time. Rather, it is a truth affirmed by all the prophets of the Old Testament. The prophets, inspired by the Holy Spirit, foretold of the coming Messiah and testified to His redemptive work.
Through His name:Peter emphasises that salvation comes through the name of Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus holds significant meaning because it represents His nature, character, and authority. In the Bible, “name” often refers to a person’s identity and all that they represent. Therefore, trusting in Jesus’ name implies placing faith in who He is and what He has accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection.
Whosoever believeth in Him:This verse underscores the universal scope of salvation. The offer of forgiveness and redemption through Jesus is available to all, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or social standing. “Whosoever” implies an inclusive invitation, emphasising that anyone who believes in Jesus Christ can experience forgiveness of sins and be reconciled with God.
Shall receive remission of sins:The central theme of the gospel message is the forgiveness of sins. Through faith in Jesus Christ, one can receive complete pardon and liberation from the guilt, power, and consequences of sin. This forgiveness is made possible by Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross and His victory over sin and death through His resurrection.
