Acts 20:30
Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Acts 20:30 (KJV)
Context
Paul spoke these words in a farewell address to the elders of the church in Ephesus, meeting them at Miletus. He knew that after his departure, dangers would arise both from outside and from within the congregation. The warning here is specific: some would come from among the elders themselves, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them.
Several key points help us understand this verse:
Internal threat
Paul says the danger will come from “your own selves,” meaning the Ephesian church would face challenges not only from external sources but also from within its own community. This highlights the importance of vigilance and discernment among church leaders and members alike.
Perverse teachings
The term “perverse things” translates a Greek word (diastrepho) that means to distort, twist, or turn aside from what is right. These false teachers would twist the message of Christ, leading others away from the true faith. This reminds us to be rooted in sound doctrine and to examine carefully any teaching presented to us.
Drawing disciples away
The ultimate goal of these false teachers is to draw disciples after themselves. They seek to gather followers for their own purposes, undermining the unity and truth of the Christian community. This highlights the importance of being firmly grounded in the teachings of Christ and aware of the potential for deception.
Biblical connections
The pattern of false teachers enticing others appears elsewhere in Scripture. Proverbs 16:29 describes a violent man who entices his neighbor and leads him into a way that is not good, and Proverbs 16:28 says a perverse man sows strife and separates close friends. Proverbs 22:25 warns that believers can learn the ways of such men and be corrupted by evil communications. These passages reinforce the danger of perverse speech and the need to avoid both speaking such things and keeping company with those who do.
Application
We should be discerning when it comes to teachings and beliefs we encounter within the Christian community. Compare them with the Scriptures and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to ensure we are not led astray. It is vital for believers to remain steadfast in the truth of the gospel, staying grounded in the Word of God and embracing sound doctrine.
The church community also plays a crucial role in recognizing and addressing false teachings. Leaders and members alike must be watchful and correct any distortions that arise. Guarding one’s heart and being rooted in sound doctrine protects us from being drawn away by those who distort the truth.
Reflection
Acts 20:30 warns that the greatest threats to the church’s purity often come from within, from those who twist the truth for their own following. This calls us to vigilance, faithfulness to the gospel, and accountability within the church. As we remain grounded in Christ and His Word, we can stand firm against deception and keep our eyes fixed on the true Shepherd.
