Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

Context

Paul speaks here to the Ephesian elders at Miletus, closing his farewell address. The word “Therefore” ties his command to the warnings just given: grievous wolves would enter the flock, and men from among the elders themselves would distort the truth to draw away disciples (Acts 20:29-30). Watchfulness is the needed response to that coming danger.

Meaning

“Watch” means to be alert and on guard, both over one’s own heart and over the church. “Remember” calls the elders to recall Paul’s teaching and warnings. His ministry among them lasted about three years, and he did not stop warning them individually, night and day, with tears. His tears show genuine love and deep concern for their spiritual safety.

Biblical connections

Paul’s earlier visits and ministry in Ephesus (Acts 18:19-20; Acts 19:1, 8) support the three-year period he mentions. The call to watch echoes Jesus’ general command to stay alert (Matthew 24:42), but here it is applied specifically to the dangers facing the Ephesian church.

Application

Believers today are called to remain watchful against false teaching and to remember God’s faithfulness and the lessons learned from His Word. Faithful ministry involves persistent, personal, and affectionate warning, even when it costs tears.
