Acts 20:32
“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”
Context:Acts 20:32 is part of a farewell address given by the apostle Paul to the Ephesian elders in Miletus. Paul had spent three years ministering in Ephesus, and now he was on his way to Jerusalem. Knowing that he would not see the Ephesian elders again, he shared some important words of encouragement and exhortation.
Commending to God:Paul begins by commending the Ephesian elders to God. This means that he entrusts them into God’s care and protection. It reflects Paul’s confidence in God’s ability to watch over and guide the believers in Ephesus even in his absence. It also highlights the importance of relying on God for strength and support.
The word of His grace:Paul further commends the Ephesian elders to “the word of his grace.” Here, Paul is referring to the Gospel message, the good news of Jesus Christ, which is a message of God’s grace and salvation. The word of God’s grace is powerful and transformative. It has the ability to change lives, bring forgiveness and reconciliation, and provide hope and strength.
Building up:Paul emphasizes that the word of God’s grace is not only capable of saving souls but also of building up believers. It has the power to edify, strengthen, and encourage them in their faith. The word of God, when received and applied in the lives of believers, can bring spiritual growth, maturity, and a deeper understanding of God’s purposes and promises.
Inheritance among the sanctified:Finally, Paul assures the Ephesian elders that through the word of God’s grace, they will receive an inheritance among the sanctified. This inheritance refers to the blessings and rewards that await believers in Christ. It includes the eternal life and fellowship with God, as well as the abundant blessings and spiritual gifts received in this present life.
The term “sanctified” refers to those who have been set apart and made holy through their faith in Jesus Christ. Believers are sanctified by the work of the Holy Spirit, who indwells them and empowers them to live a godly life.
