Listen to this article

“Acts 24:25 (KJV): And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.”

Context:Acts 24:25 is a verse from the book of Acts, which describes the early days of the Christian church and the spread of the gospel. In this particular passage, the apostle Paul is on trial before Felix, the Roman governor of Judea, who is listening to Paul’s defense.

Paul’s Reasoning:The verse begins by mentioning that Paul reasoned with Felix. Paul is engaged in a conversation with Felix, discussing three important topics: righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come.

Righteousness:Righteousness refers to living in accordance with God’s moral standards. Paul likely spoke to Felix about the need for individuals to live righteously, seeking to do what is just and pleasing to God. The Bible often emphasises the importance of righteousness in a believer’s life.

Temperance:Temperance, also translated as self-control or moderation, is the ability to exercise restraint over one’s desires and impulses. Paul might have highlighted the significance of temperance in the pursuit of a godly life, encouraging Felix to exercise self-control in all aspects of his life.

Judgment to Come:The mention of judgment to come suggests that Paul spoke to Felix about the ultimate accountability before God. Paul likely emphasised that everyone will face God’s judgment and be held accountable for their actions. This teaching underscores the importance of living in accordance with God’s standards.

Felix’s Response:Upon hearing Paul’s words, Felix trembled. This reaction implies that Paul’s message had a profound impact on Felix, stirring his emotions and causing him to feel convicted. However, instead of fully embracing the truth and making a decision, Felix chose to postpone further discussion, saying, “Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.”

The Significance:Acts 24:25 serves as a reminder of the powerful impact of the gospel message. It demonstrates that the truth of God’s Word has the potential to convict individuals and stir their hearts. However, it also reveals the struggle people may face in responding to the message. Felix’s hesitation to make an immediate decision reflects the danger of procrastination when it comes to matters of eternal significance.

In conclusion, Acts 24:25 highlights Paul’s discussion with Felix on righteousness, temperance, and the impending judgment to come. Felix’s response of trembling demonstrates the profound impact of the gospel message, but his decision to delay a commitment serves as a reminder of the dangers of procrastination in responding to God’s truth.
