Acts 24:24
And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
Acts 24:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the narrative in the Book of Acts that describes the Apostle Paul’s imprisonment and subsequent appearances before various Roman officials. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem and accused by the Jewish leaders of stirring up trouble and defiling the temple. As a Roman citizen, Paul exercised his right to appeal to Caesar for a fair trial. While awaiting transport to Rome, he was held in custody in Caesarea, and this is where Felix comes into the picture.
Felix was a Roman procurator, appointed by Emperor Claudius, and he governed Judea from around 52 to 60 AD. He was known for his corrupt and oppressive rule. Drusilla, his wife, was the daughter of Herod Agrippa I, a Jewish ruler, and she had abandoned her first husband to marry Felix. Her Jewish background meant she would have been familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures and the messianic expectations, making her a particularly relevant listener to Paul’s message about the Messiah.
Meaning
When Felix hears about Paul and the “faith in Christ,” he summons the Apostle to hear his testimony. The Greek text renders the phrase as “concerning the faith in Christ Jesus,” indicating that the content of Paul’s message was specifically about faith directed toward Christ Jesus. This provides Paul with an opportunity to present the Gospel message and share his beliefs about Jesus Christ. As an ambassador for Christ, Paul took advantage of every chance to proclaim the Good News, even when faced with powerful rulers.
The encounter between Felix, Drusilla, and Paul highlights the universal appeal and impact of the Christian faith. Felix, though familiar with Jewish customs, was likely curious to learn more about this emerging movement that centered around Jesus Christ. However, the text does not explicitly state the outcome of Paul’s discussion with Felix, nor does it indicate any lasting change in Felix’s attitude or actions.
Application
Acts 24:24 reminds us of the opportunities we have to share our faith, even in unexpected circumstances and before influential individuals. It encourages us to be ready to articulate our beliefs and engage in meaningful conversations about Jesus and the hope He brings.
Reflection
Paul, though a prisoner, was given repeated opportunities to speak about faith in Christ to the highest Roman authority in the region. His example challenges us to remain faithful witnesses in every situation, trusting that God can use our words to reach even the most unlikely hearers.
