Acts 28:3

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

Acts 28:3 (KJV)

Acts 28:3 is part of the narrative of the apostle Paul’s journey to Rome as a prisoner. After surviving a shipwreck on the island of Malta, Paul and the other survivors were welcomed by the local people. This verse describes an incident that occurred during their stay on the island.

Paul was gathering a bundle of sticks to add to the fire. As he laid the sticks on the fire, a venomous snake, referred to as a viper, came out of the heat and fastened onto his hand. The viper was likely concealed in the bundle of sticks, torpid from the cold, and revived by the warmth of the fire. The Greek word for viper, echidna, indicates a poisonous snake.

This incident carries spiritual significance and serves as a powerful lesson. Here are some key points we can draw from Acts 28:3:

  • God’s providence

Throughout the book of Acts, we see God’s providential care for Paul. Despite the perils and challenges he faced, God was with him, guiding and protecting him. Even in this specific incident, God’s hand is evident. The snake’s attack could have been fatal, but God had a plan to demonstrate His power.

  • Spiritual warfare

The snake, often associated with evil and Satan, can be seen as a symbol of spiritual warfare. The attack on Paul’s hand serves as a reminder that Christians may face opposition, even in unexpected circumstances. It reminds us to be watchful and discerning in our spiritual journey.

  • Divine protection

Paul’s survival in the face of the snakebite reveals God’s protection over His faithful servants. Despite the venomous nature of the snake, Paul was unharmed. This event underscores God’s ability to shield His followers from harm and fulfill His purposes for their lives.

  • Miraculous signs

Throughout the book of Acts, we see various miracles and signs performed through the apostles. This incident is another example of a miraculous sign that caught the attention of the people on the island. It opened the door for Paul to minister to them and share the gospel.

Paul’s active participation in gathering sticks, despite his status as a prisoner, demonstrates humility and a willingness to serve. This challenges us to serve others in practical ways, even when we are in difficult circumstances. The event also reminds us to be attentive to God’s leading and to recognize His miraculous interventions in our lives.

Acts 28:3 reminds us of God’s providential care, His power over spiritual warfare, and His ability to protect His people. It encourages us to trust that God can turn even a dangerous encounter into an opportunity for His glory and for the advancement of the gospel.
