Romans 2:7
To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
Romans 2:7 (KJV)
Context
Romans is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this chapter, Paul addresses both Jews and Gentiles, emphasizing that all people are accountable to God and will be judged based on their actions and the condition of their hearts. Romans 2:6 states that God will render to every person according to their works, and verse 7 describes one category of people to whom God will give eternal life.
Meaning
Paul highlights the importance of persistence in doing good. “Patient continuance in well doing” means consistently living a righteous life and striving to follow God’s commandments. It is not a single act but a sustained, ongoing commitment to obedience, demonstrated through a life of faithful action. Our faith should be shown through our deeds, and we should remain steadfast in our commitment to righteousness.
The phrase “seek for glory and honour and immortality” reveals the motivation behind the actions of those who patiently continue in well-doing. Rather than seeking self-gratification or worldly rewards, believers are called to seek the glory and honor that come from God, and immortality, which is brought to light through the Gospel. This points to a desire for heavenly rewards and a deep longing to please God, acknowledging His authority and sovereignty.
“Eternal life” is the ultimate reward for those who diligently seek God and persevere in righteousness. This refers to an everlasting, intimate relationship with God, free from sin and death, and enjoying His presence for all eternity. The verse is not teaching salvation by works; rather, it describes the kind of life that God, who judges impartially, will reward. It contrasts with those who are contentious and do not obey the truth (Romans 2:8), emphasizing that genuine faith is demonstrated through persistent, patient obedience.
Application
Romans 2:7 teaches us several important lessons:
Consistency in doing good: We should not grow weary in doing what is right, but continue steadfastly, knowing that our actions have eternal significance.
Right motivation: Our deeds should not be driven by self-centered ambitions or earthly rewards. Instead, we should be motivated by a desire to bring glory and honor to God and seek eternal blessings from Him.
Hope in eternal life: Believers have the assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. This should give us hope and encouragement, especially during challenging times.
Overall, Romans 2:7 encourages believers to persevere in doing good, with a focus on seeking God’s glory and honor, and holding on to the hope of eternal life.
