Romans 16:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this final chapter, Paul is greeting and sending his personal greetings to various individuals in the Roman church.

Timothy (Timotheus):Timothy was a close companion and co-worker of Paul. He is mentioned multiple times in Paul’s letters and is known to have accompanied Paul on many of his missionary journeys. Timothy was entrusted with important responsibilities, including overseeing churches and assisting Paul in his ministry.

Lucius:There are several individuals named Lucius mentioned in the New Testament, but it is difficult to determine with certainty which one is referred to in this verse. Some scholars suggest that this may be Lucius of Cyrene, who was one of the teachers and prophets in the church at Antioch (Acts 13:1).

Jason:Jason is believed to be the same Jason mentioned in Acts 17:5-9. He was a believer in Thessalonica who received Paul and Silas into his house when they visited the city. Jason and some other believers faced persecution because of their association with Paul, and he was brought before the authorities.

Sosipater:Sosipater is not mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament, and not much is known about him. Some scholars suggest that he may be the same person mentioned in Acts 20:4 as Sopater of Berea, who accompanied Paul on his journey.

Kinsmen:Paul refers to Timothy, Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater as his kinsmen, indicating a shared Jewish heritage or close relationship in the faith.

Salutations:In the ancient world, it was customary to send greetings or salutations to individuals when writing letters. Paul, being the author of this letter, conveys his personal greetings through Timothy, Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater to the believers in Rome.

  • Paul valued the companionship and partnership in ministry with individuals like Timothy, Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater.
  • The mention of Timothy highlights his importance as a trusted co-worker and representative of Paul’s teachings.
  • The mention of Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater signifies their contribution and presence in the early Christian community, although their exact roles and backgrounds are not extensively documented.
  • Paul’s personal greetings show his love, concern, and connection to the believers in Rome, even though he had not visited them at the time of writing this letter.

It’s important to note that while this verse provides historical context and insights into the relationships of these individuals, its primary purpose is to extend Paul’s personal greetings rather than conveying deep doctrinal or theological teachings.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and the entire book of Romans to gain a comprehensive understanding of the themes and teachings presented by Paul in his letter.
