1 Corinthians 1:5

That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

1 Corinthians 1:5 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address challenges in the Corinthian church. In the opening verses, he gives thanks to God for the grace the Corinthians have received in Christ Jesus. Verse 5 specifies how that grace has worked: they have been enriched by Christ in every way, especially in all utterance and all knowledge.

“Enriched by him” means that Christ is the source of every spiritual blessing the Corinthians possess. This enrichment is not primarily material but spiritual. “Utterance” refers to speech, especially the ability to declare and teach the gospel. “Knowledge” means understanding and comprehension of spiritual truth. The Corinthians were abundantly supplied in both, enabling them to speak the truth and grasp it fully.

This enrichment is a present reality for believers in Christ, not a distant hope. It comes through union with Christ, who, though rich, became poor so that believers might receive the riches of grace. Therefore, the Corinthians’ abundance was not a reason for pride but a gift to be used for building up the church.

Paul’s thanksgiving in 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 sets the tone for the whole letter. The same grace that enriches believers in speech and knowledge also equips them to live for God’s glory.

Believers today can thank God for the grace that enriches them in Christ. Every ability to speak the truth and every insight into Scripture is a gift from Him. This should lead to humility, gratitude, and a desire to use these gifts to serve others and honor God.

How are you using the utterance and knowledge God has given you? Are you building up the church, or are you tempted to boast? Let this verse remind you that all you have comes from Christ, and it is meant to be shared in love.
