1 Corinthians 16:15

I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)

1 Corinthians 16:15 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul closes his first letter to the Corinthians with a series of final exhortations. In this verse, he commends the household of Stephanas as a model of faithful service. Paul had personally baptized Stephanas and his family (1 Corinthians 1:16), and he now holds them up as an example for the whole church.

The phrase “firstfruits of Achaia” indicates that the household of Stephanas was among the first converts in the Roman province of Achaia, of which Corinth was the leading city. They were early believers who responded to the gospel and, by God’s grace, had persevered in their faith.

The key expression “addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints” describes a deliberate, self-imposed commitment. In the original language, the word conveys the idea of setting oneself to a task or devoting oneself to a purpose. This was not an official appointment but a voluntary dedication to serving other believers. The household of Stephanas had chosen to make the ministry of the saints a priority in their lives.

Paul’s opening words, “I beseech you, brethren,” connect directly to the following verse, where he urges the Corinthians to submit to such people and to everyone who joins in the work and labors (1 Corinthians 16:16). The purpose of verse 15 is to give the reason for this exhortation: because the Corinthians knew this household’s character and service, they should recognize and honor those who labor in the Lord’s work.

Later in the same chapter, Paul rejoices in the arrival of Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus, who supplied what was lacking on the Corinthians’ part and refreshed Paul’s spirit (1 Corinthians 16:17-18). This confirms that their ministry was practical and recognized by the apostle.

The example of the household of Stephanas teaches the importance of being devoted to serving others within the church community. Ministry involves selfless acts of service, showing love, and meeting the needs of fellow believers. We should seek to actively participate in the life of the church, using our gifts and talents to bless others and being willing to help meet practical needs.

Being among the first to respond to the Gospel carries a special responsibility to set an example for others. If we have received God’s grace, we should strive to live in a way that glorifies Him and encourages others to follow Him.

Let us develop a heart that is willing to dedicate ourselves to the ministry of the saints. This means being intentional about meeting the needs of fellow believers, showing love, and supporting one another in the journey of faith. The household of Stephanas shows that whole households can serve together, and their voluntary devotion to the saints remains a pattern for the church today.

Consider the quiet, consistent service of Stephanas and his household. Their dedication was not forced but flowed from a heart transformed by the gospel. In what practical ways can you devote yourself to serving fellow believers this week?
