Ephesians 4:15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Ephesians 4:15 (KJV)

Ephesians 4 centers on the unity and maturity of the body of Christ. The preceding verses contrast spiritual maturity with the instability of being children tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine. Verse 15 presents the positive path: speaking the truth in love leads to growth into Christ, the head.

The phrase “speaking the truth” calls believers to integrity and honesty in all communication, both words and actions, without deceit or falsehood. It can also refer to the Gospel, the word of truth, or Christ Himself, who is the truth. The verse insists that truth must be spoken “in love,” with genuine concern for the well-being and growth of others. Love tempers truth, ensuring that our communication is marked by compassion, kindness, and grace.

The goal of such speaking is growth: “may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” This growth is not merely personal but corporate, as the whole body matures into Christ in every aspect of life—spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and relationally. Christ is the head of the Church, the ultimate authority, and the model we seek to emulate. Our growth and maturity must be centered on Him and submitted to His lordship.

This verse connects to Ephesians 4:16, which describes the whole body joined and knit together, growing and building itself up in love. The preaching of the Gospel and sincere speaking of the truth are instrumental means of this growth.

Ephesians 4:15 challenges us to examine our communication, ensuring it is both truthful and loving. It calls us to be intentional about personal and corporate growth, actively aligning our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors with the character and teachings of Christ. As we do so, we become more effective witnesses of His truth and love in the world.

  • Meditate on this verse, study it in its larger context, and seek God’s guidance in understanding and applying its principles to your life.

Consider how your words and actions reflect both truth and love. Are there areas where you need to speak more boldly or more gently? Growth into Christ is a lifelong journey, and each step taken in truth and love draws you closer to the head, even Christ.
