Ephesians 3:12

In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Context

The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Ephesus while he was in prison. The letter emphasizes the unity of the church and the mystery of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. In the immediate context, Paul has just spoken of God’s eternal purpose in Christ Jesus our Lord (Ephesians 3:11). Verse 12 then draws the personal consequence: because of that eternal purpose, believers now have boldness and access with confidence.

Meaning

“In whom” points to Jesus Christ, the central figure of the Christian faith. Union with Him is the foundation for everything that follows. “We have boldness” means that believers have confidence and assurance in their relationship with God. This boldness is not self-generated; it is grounded in Christ’s finished work. “Access with confidence” describes the believer’s direct entry into God’s presence through Jesus. In the Greek text, the words for boldness (parrhesia) and access (prosagoge) together highlight the freedom and confidence of our approach to God. This access is a present reality, not a distant hope. “By the faith of him” is understood as faith in Christ, or as the faith that belongs to Him and His faithfulness. Our access to God is made possible through faith in Jesus and His work on the cross.
