Ephesians 3:15

Listen to this article

“Ephesians 3:15 (KJV): Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.”

To better understand this verse, it’s helpful to explore the surrounding context as well. Let’s look at Ephesians 3:14-21 to gain a broader understanding of the passage:

“Ephesians 3:14-21 (KJV):

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,: 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;: 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;: 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,: 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”

In these verses, the apostle Paul is writing to the Ephesian believers, sharing a prayer he offered on their behalf. In verse 15, Paul refers to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, emphasizing that it is from Him that “the whole family in heaven and earth is named.”

The Family of God:The term “the whole family in heaven and earth” refers to all believers in Christ, both those who have passed away and are now in heaven, as well as those who are currently living on earth. It highlights the unity and connection among all believers, regardless of their physical location or time period. This concept reflects the idea that through faith in Christ, we become part of a spiritual family, the family of God.

Named by God:The phrase “is named” signifies more than just a label or identification. In biblical times, a name often carried significant meaning and represented one’s character, purpose, or authority. Here, being named by God indicates that believers derive their identity, purpose, and authority from Him. It suggests that we belong to God, are identified with Him, and reflect His character as members of His family.

Unity and Oneness:This verse underscores the unity and oneness of all believers in Christ. It transcends the boundaries of time and space, emphasizing that regardless of our earthly circumstances, we are part of the same spiritual family. This unity is made possible through the work of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of believers.

God’s Sovereign Plan:The concept of being named by God also reflects His sovereignty and His divine plan for His people. God’s plan includes both believers in heaven and those on earth, and it encompasses all aspects of their lives. It highlights the unbreakable bond between the Father and His children and signifies His intimate involvement in their lives.

In summary, Ephesians 3:15 highlights the unity, identity, and authority of believers in Christ, emphasizing that the entire family of God, both in heaven and on earth, derives its name from the Father. It reminds us of the spiritual connection we share with other believers and the significance of being identified with God. It also emphasizes God’s sovereign plan and His involvement in the lives of His children throughout all generations.
