Wherefore I desire that yee faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. Ephesians 3:13 (KJV)

Context: Before diving into Ephesians 3:13, it is important to understand the surrounding passage. The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus while he was imprisoned. In the preceding verses Paul explains the mystery of the gospel, emphasizing God’s plan to include the Gentiles as part of His people.

Paul’s desire for the Ephesians: In Ephesians 3:13 Paul expresses a heartfelt request for the Ephesian believers. He asks them not to be discouraged or lose heart because of his suffering, which he endures for the sake of the Gospel. Although Paul faces personal hardships and tribulations, he does not want the Ephesians to become discouraged but instead to remain encouraged and stand firm in their faith.

Sharing in Paul’s tribulations: By urging the Ephesians not to faint or share in his afflictions, Paul reveals the deep connection between himself and the believers in Ephesus. He considers their faith journey and growth in Christ as closely linked to his own ministry and responsibility. Paul’s trials and sufferings were not in vain; they were borne out of his commitment to preaching the Gospel and nurturing the believers.

The glory of the Ephesians and the encouragement to persevere: Paul adds that his tribulations for the Ephesians are their glory. Their willingness to endure without succumbing to the same afflictions demonstrates faithful perseverance. Their steadfastness in the midst of difficulty reflects the transforming power of the Gospel in their lives and brings honor and glory to God.

Application: Ephesians 3:13 encourages believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even when faced with trials and difficulties. We are reminded that our faith journey is not an isolated experience but is connected to the larger body of Christ. Like Paul, we should be willing to endure hardships for the sake of the Gospel, and our perseverance can inspire and encourage others in their faith.

Overall: Ephesians 3:13 highlights the interconnectedness of believers and the importance of supporting and encouraging one another during challenging times. It encourages us to find strength and purpose in our tribulations, knowing that our endurance brings glory to God and inspires those around us.
