Ephesians 4:19

Listen to this article

“Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

Context:Ephesians is one of the letters written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this particular chapter, Paul emphasizes the importance of unity and maturity in the body of Christ. He encourages believers to walk worthy of their calling and to grow in Christ-like character.

The state of spiritual callousness:In Ephesians 4:19, Paul describes a group of people who have become callous or hardened in their hearts towards God. They have lost their sensitivity to moral and spiritual values. This state of callousness results in a downward spiral of sin, leading them to engage in lasciviousness (unrestrained lust) and uncleanness (impurity).

Giving themselves over:The phrase “have given themselves over” indicates a deliberate choice to abandon oneself to sinful desires and behaviors. It reflects a willful surrender to the corrupting influences of the world and the flesh. Such individuals are no longer resistant to temptation but rather embrace and pursue sinful practices.

Lasciviousness and uncleanness:Lasciviousness refers to a lack of restraint or self-control in sexual matters. It involves indulging in immoral behaviors and lustful desires. Uncleanness refers to impurity or defilement in all aspects of life, including thoughts, words, and actions. These behaviors stand in direct contrast to the call to live a holy and righteous life in Christ.

Greediness:The verse concludes by mentioning “greediness,” which signifies an insatiable desire for more. The individuals described are not satisfied with their current sinful indulgences but continually seek to gratify their desires, never finding true fulfillment.

Application for believers:While Ephesians 4:19 describes the state of unbelievers who have rejected God, there are important lessons for believers as well. It serves as a warning against becoming spiritually callous and allowing sin to gain a foothold in our lives. As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in righteousness, resisting the temptations of the flesh and the world.

Renewing our hearts:To avoid the state described in Ephesians 4:19, believers are encouraged to continually renew their minds and hearts through the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. We should strive to maintain a sensitive conscience, being alert to the subtle ways sin can take root in our lives.

Pursuing godliness:Ephesians 4:19 reminds us of the importance of pursuing holiness and living in a manner that is pleasing to God. It encourages us to resist the enticements of the world and instead pursue a life of righteousness, purity, and self-control, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
