Ephesians 4:22
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Ephesians 4:22 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to believers who have learned Christ and been taught by him, for the truth is in Jesus (Ephesians 4:20-21). This teaching grounds the command that follows: those who know Christ are called to live accordingly.
Meaning
The phrase “the old man” refers to the former way of life before knowing Christ. It represents the old self, characterised by sinful thoughts, desires, and behaviours. Paul urges believers to “put off” this old way of life. The Greek word translated “put off” (apothesthai) means to lay aside or renounce, indicating a decisive break, not merely an adjustment of behaviour.
The old man is described as corrupt, meaning morally and spiritually decayed. It is corrupted by deceitful lusts—desires rooted in deception that lead away from God’s truth and righteousness. The Greek term for “conversation” (anastrophēn) refers to one’s conduct or manner of life, so the verse calls for a change in daily living, not just inward sentiment.
The command to put off the old man is the negative counterpart to the positive command in Ephesians 4:23-24 to be renewed in the spirit of the mind and to put on the new man, created after God in righteousness and true holiness. The two actions belong together: renouncing the old way of life and embracing the new.
Application
As Christians we are called to live differently from the surrounding world. We must separate ourselves from the corrupting influences of our former sinful nature and pursue righteousness, truth, and holiness. This requires a continual process of renewing our minds, submitting to the Holy Spirit’s work, and aligning our thoughts, desires, and actions with God’s Word. The putting off of the old man is not a one-time event but an ongoing duty, for the old nature remains active in believers and must be renounced daily.
Reflection
Ephesians 4:22 urges believers to put off their former way of life, characterised by sinful desires, and to embrace the new life in Christ, clothed in righteousness and true holiness.
