Ephesians 4:21

Listen to this article

“If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus.”

Context:Ephesians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this particular verse, Paul is exhorting the believers to live a transformed life in Christ and to walk in unity and maturity as members of the body of Christ.

Hearing Him:Paul begins by emphasizing the importance of hearing Christ. This implies more than just hearing with the ears; it implies a receptive and attentive heart. True hearing involves a response to the teachings of Jesus and a willingness to follow His ways. It involves actively seeking to understand and apply His teachings in our lives.

Being Taught by Him:Paul continues by emphasizing the need to be taught by Christ. Being taught by Christ means allowing His words to shape our thinking, beliefs, and actions. It involves being open to His guidance and instruction through the Holy Spirit, who illuminates the Scriptures and helps us understand and apply God’s truth.

The Truth in Jesus:Paul further emphasizes that the truth is found in Jesus. Jesus Himself proclaimed that He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). All truth ultimately finds its source in Him. As believers, we are called to embrace and live according to the truth revealed in Jesus Christ. His teachings, life, death, and resurrection provide the foundation for our faith and the standard by which we are to live.

Application:Ephesians 4:21 challenges believers to evaluate their relationship with Jesus. Are we truly hearing Him? Are we open and receptive to His teachings and guidance? Are we actively seeking to understand and apply His truth in our lives? It is not enough to simply claim to follow Jesus; we must actively engage with His teachings and allow them to transform us from the inside out.

  • In conclusion:Ephesians 4:21 reminds us that true discipleship involves hearing Jesus, being taught by Him, and embracing the truth found in Him. It calls us to an active and transformative relationship with Christ, where His teachings shape our beliefs, actions, and character. May we continually seek to grow in our understanding and application of His truth in our lives.
