Ephesians 4:23

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Ephesians 4:23 (KJV)

Paul wrote Ephesians to believers in Ephesus, urging them to live in a manner worthy of their calling in Christ. In the surrounding verses, he contrasts the old life corrupted by deceitful desires with the new life in Christ. Verse 23 sits between the commands to put off the old self and put on the new self, describing the ongoing renewal that enables this transformation.

The phrase “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” points to a continuous, inward transformation. The Greek verb indicates a passive action—believers are being renewed by an external agent, the Holy Spirit, who works in their minds. The “spirit of your mind” refers to the inner disposition, attitude, or thinking pattern that governs a person’s life. This renewal is not a one-time event but a progressive work of the Spirit, aligning thoughts, attitudes, and perspectives with God’s truth.

This renewal is essential for putting off the old self and putting on the new self, which is created in righteousness and holiness. As the mind is renewed, behavior and character follow. It involves allowing the Holy Spirit to change our thought patterns, so that our choices reflect God’s will.

The Holy Spirit’s role in this renewal is clear: believers receive the Spirit when they accept Christ (Ephesians 1:13-14), and the Spirit guides them into all truth (John 16:13). Through the Spirit’s influence, minds are gradually conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). Renewing the mind also enables believers to discern God’s will (Romans 12:2).

How can believers actively participate in this renewal?

  • Study and meditate on God’s Word: Regularly reading and reflecting on the Bible helps align thinking with God’s perspective.

  • Pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance: Invite the Spirit to reveal areas needing transformation and to guide thought processes.

  • Guard the mind: Be mindful of influences, avoiding ungodly sources, and focusing on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8).

  • Engage in Christian community: Receive encouragement, accountability, and support from fellow believers.

  • Practice obedience and surrender: Apply God’s Word daily, submitting thoughts to His truth.

By continuously renewing the mind through the Holy Spirit, believers grow in holiness and live out their purpose as God’s children.

Renewal of the mind is both a gift and a responsibility. It is the Spirit’s work, yet believers are called to cooperate by engaging with Scripture, prayer, and community. As the mind is transformed, the whole life follows, enabling a deeper understanding of God and a faithful walk with Him.
