Ephesians 5:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

Verse: “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” (Ephesians 5:23, KJV)

Context:To understand the meaning of Ephesians 5:23, it’s essential to consider its context within the larger passage. Starting from verse 22, the apostle Paul is discussing the relationships between husbands and wives, highlighting the mutual submission and love they should have for one another.

Husband as the head:The verse states that the husband is the head of the wife. This concept of headship doesn’t imply superiority or dominance but rather carries the idea of leadership, responsibility, and sacrificial love. Just as Christ is the head of the church, husbands are called to lovingly lead, guide, and care for their wives.

Christ as the head of the church:The comparison made in this verse between the husband’s role and Christ’s role emphasizes the importance of Christ’s relationship with the church. Christ is the ultimate example of love and self-sacrifice, who gave Himself for the church (Ephesians 5:25). Therefore, husbands are called to reflect Christ’s sacrificial love in their role as the head of their families.

Savior of the body:The verse also mentions that Christ is the Savior of the body, referring to the church. This highlights the redemptive work of Christ, who gave Himself to save and sanctify the church. Husbands are called to emulate Christ’s sacrificial love by caring for and nurturing their wives, just as Christ cares for and nourishes the church.

Mutual submission:It’s important to note that while the verse emphasizes the husband’s role as the head, it is situated within a broader passage that speaks of mutual submission and love between husbands and wives. Ephesians 5:21 states, “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” This mutual submission implies that both spouses have a responsibility to love, honor, and respect one another.

Christ-centered marriage:Ephesians 5:23 reminds us of the central role of Christ in a Christian marriage. Both husband and wife are called to imitate Christ’s love, humility, and self-sacrifice. A Christ-centered marriage is marked by mutual submission, respect, and a shared commitment to glorify God through their relationship.

In summary, Ephesians 5:23 teaches us about the husband’s role as the head of the wife in the context of a Christ-centered marriage. Husbands are called to lead their families with sacrificial love, just as Christ loves and leads the church. This passage also emphasizes the mutual submission and love that should characterize the relationship between spouses.
