Philippians 1:10

That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

Philippians 1:10 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians while imprisoned, most likely in Rome, to express love and gratitude to the believers in Philippi. In this verse, Paul shares his prayer that they would live in a manner bringing glory to God until the day of Christ.

Paul prays that the Philippians would discern and recognize what is truly excellent or of the highest value in God’s eyes. The Greek word translated “approve” (dokimazō) means to test or prove, as metals are tested for genuineness. Thus, believers are to distinguish between things that differ—good and best, earthly and heavenly, carnal and spiritual—according to biblical principles. This requires wisdom and spiritual insight, emphasizing the importance of making wise choices based on Scripture.

The word “sincere” in Greek (eilikrines) means “pure” or “genuine.” Paul desires the Philippians to live authentically, without hypocrisy or deceit, with actions and motives aligned with truth in their relationship with God and others. Such a life reflects a genuine heart that is consistent and honest before God.

Paul also encourages them to live without offence, avoiding behaviors that could cause others to stumble or hinder the Gospel. This involves sensitivity to others’ weaknesses and not creating unnecessary barriers for those around them.

The phrase “till the day of Christ” refers to Christ’s future return and final judgment. Paul emphasizes that the Philippians’ conduct should consistently reflect God’s kingdom values throughout their lives until that day, regardless of challenges or opposition. Their character should maintain sincerity and avoid offence, bearing witness to the kingdom even in difficulty.

Discernment is not an end in itself; it leads to a life of purity and blamelessness. As believers, we are called to test what we hear and see, approving what is excellent, and to live sincerely and without offence, so that our lives point others to Christ until He returns.
