Philippians 1:8

Listen to this article

“For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians while he was imprisoned, expressing his affection and gratitude towards the believers in Philippi. He begins the letter by conveying his thankfulness for their partnership in the Gospel and expresses his deep love for them.

God is my record:In this verse, Paul starts by making an appeal to God as his witness or record. He assures the Philippians that what he is about to say regarding his longing for them is genuine and true. This emphasises Paul’s credibility and the seriousness of his heartfelt message.

Greatly I long after you all:Paul expresses his intense desire and longing to be with the Philippian believers. His affection for them is deep and heartfelt. Despite being physically separated from them due to his imprisonment, he yearns to be in their presence and to share in their fellowship.

In the bowels of Jesus Christ:The phrase “in the bowels of Jesus Christ” may sound unusual to our modern ears, but in biblical times, it referred to deep affection, compassion, and empathy. It conveys the idea that Paul’s love for the Philippians is not superficial but originates from the very core of his being, his innermost being united with Christ.

  • Genuine affection:Paul’s example challenges us to cultivate genuine affection and love for our fellow believers. We should deeply care for one another, even when physically separated, and express our longing for fellowship.
  • Sincere witness:Paul’s appeal to God as his witness reminds us of the importance of integrity in our words and actions. We should strive to be people of truth, and our commitments and expressions of love should be genuine and trustworthy.
  • Christ-centered love:The phrase “in the bowels of Jesus Christ” highlights the centrality of Christ in Paul’s affections. As believers, we should have our hearts transformed by Christ’s love, allowing it to flow through us towards others. Our love should be motivated and empowered by our relationship with Jesus.
  • Overcoming separation:Paul’s longing for the Philippians teaches us to overcome physical distance and find ways to connect and support one another, even in challenging circumstances. We can reach out, encourage, and uplift our brothers and sisters in Christ, even if we cannot be physically present.
