Philippians 1:6

Listen to this article

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Context:This verse comes from the book of Philippians, which was written by the apostle Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome. In this letter, Paul expresses his deep affection for the believers in Philippi and encourages them to stand firm in their faith.

Understanding the historical and literary context of a verse helps to grasp its deeper meaning. In Philippians 1:6, Paul is addressing the Philippians’ faith and their partnership in the gospel. He expresses confidence that God, who initiated a good work within them, will continue to bring it to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.

Confidence in God’s Work:The verse begins with Paul expressing his confidence. He is certain, without any doubt, about a particular matter. Paul’s confidence lies in God’s faithfulness and His ability to complete the good work He began in the believers. This work refers to the process of sanctification and transformation that God initiates in the lives of believers when they place their faith in Jesus Christ.

God’s Initiating and Continuing Work:The verse highlights that it is God who initiates the good work within believers. It is not something they achieve on their own merit or by their own efforts. Salvation is a gift of grace, and God’s work within us is a result of His love and mercy. Paul emphasizes that God will also bring this work to completion. This means that God is committed to transforming and perfecting His people throughout their journey of faith.

Until the Day of Jesus Christ:The work that God began will be completed until the day of Jesus Christ. This phrase refers to the return of Jesus and the culmination of God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Until that day, God will continue to work in the lives of believers, conforming them to the image of Christ, and equipping them for their purpose and calling in this world.

Application:Philippians 1:6 provides great encouragement for believers. It reminds us that our salvation and growth in faith are not dependent on our own strength or abilities, but on the unwavering faithfulness of God. We can have confidence in God’s work within us, knowing that He will continue to transform and mold us into the likeness of Christ. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s process, remain steadfast in our faith, and rely on His power to bring about lasting change in our lives.
