Colossians 1:9
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Colossians 1:9 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Colossae, a city in ancient Asia Minor, while he was imprisoned around AD 60-62. He addressed false teachings that were creeping into the church and presented Christ as preeminent and all-sufficient. In the opening of the letter, Paul gave thanks for the Colossians’ faith in Christ, their love for all the saints, and the hope laid up for them in heaven, which he had learned from Epaphras. The phrase “For this cause” in verse 9 connects his prayer directly to that good report of their faith and love.
Meaning
Paul and his companions had not ceased to pray for the Colossians since the day they heard of their faith. Their prayer was persistent and specific, focused on the believers’ spiritual growth rather than on temporal concerns. The heart of the prayer is that the Colossians “might be filled with the knowledge of his will.” This is not a mere intellectual awareness but a deep, full, and experiential knowledge of God’s purpose and plan. It involves knowing and discerning God’s desires, principles, and ways, which come through studying and meditating on Scripture and through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Paul prays that this knowledge would come “in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Wisdom is the practical application of knowledge—the ability to discern and make sound decisions in accordance with God’s will. Spiritual understanding is insight given by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to grasp the deeper truths of God’s Word and apply them to their lives. Together, they show that knowing God’s will is not abstract but is meant to shape how we live.
Biblical connections
The goal of this prayer is not knowledge for its own sake. The immediate context in Colossians 1:10 shows that Paul desired the Colossians to walk worthy of the Lord, please Him in every way, bear fruit in every good work, and grow in the knowledge of God. This verse models intercessory prayer focused on the spiritual growth of other believers, teaching that knowing God’s will is a gift to be sought in prayer and is inseparable from wisdom and spiritual understanding.
Application
We can make prayer a central part of our daily routine, not only for ourselves but also for our fellow believers. Paul’s dedication to praying for the spiritual well-being of others serves as an example for us to follow. We should seek a deeper knowledge of God’s will by studying the Scriptures, relying on the Holy Spirit to grant us wisdom and spiritual understanding. By doing so, we can align our lives with God’s purposes, make wise choices, and grow in our relationship with Him.
Reflection
Colossians 1:9 reminds us of the importance of prayer, seeking the knowledge of God’s will, and growing in wisdom and spiritual understanding. By incorporating these principles into our lives, we can deepen our relationship with God and align ourselves with His purposes.
