Colossians 4:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider the context of the book of Colossians. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Colossae while he was in prison. The purpose of the letter was to address certain heresies and false teachings that had infiltrated the church and to exalt the supremacy of Christ.

Onesimus:Onesimus was a slave who belonged to Philemon, a member of the Colossian church. He had run away from his master and had encountered Paul while he was in prison. Through Paul’s influence, Onesimus became a believer in Christ and served Paul faithfully. Paul refers to him as a “faithful and beloved brother.”

Unity in the Body of Christ:In this verse, Paul highlights the unity of the believers in Christ. He refers to Onesimus as “one of you,” emphasizing that he is part of the same community of believers in Colossae. The fact that Paul refers to a former slave as a beloved brother shows the transformative power of the gospel, breaking down social and cultural barriers.

Sharing News and Encouragement:Paul states that Onesimus will make known to the Colossians all things that are happening where Paul is. This indicates that Onesimus was entrusted with the responsibility of delivering news, updates, and possibly the letter itself to the Colossian church. Paul trusted Onesimus to accurately communicate his message and to provide the necessary information to the church.

The Value of Faithfulness:Paul’s description of Onesimus as “faithful” speaks to his character and reliability. Despite his past as a runaway slave, Onesimus had become a faithful follower of Christ and a trustworthy companion to Paul. This underscores the importance of faithfulness in the Christian life, regardless of one’s background or circumstances.

Application:From this verse, we can learn several lessons. Firstly, we should recognize the unity we share with other believers in Christ, regardless of social, cultural, or economic differences. Secondly, the verse highlights the transformative power of the gospel, demonstrating that anyone can become a faithful and beloved member of the Christian community. Lastly, the verse encourages us to be trustworthy and reliable in our relationships, serving as faithful messengers of the gospel and faithfully sharing the news of what God is doing in our lives.

  • In summary, Colossians 4:9 reminds us of the unity we have as believers in Christ and the transformative power of the gospel. It encourages us to be faithful and reliable in our relationships and to share the good news with others.
