Colossians 4:13

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.”

Context:To gain a better understanding of Colossians 4:13, it’s important to consider the broader context of the letter. The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians while he was imprisoned, addressing various issues and concerns within the church.

Who is Paul referring to? In this verse, Paul is referring to a man named Epaphras. Epaphras was likely a member or leader of the Colossian church and a dear friend of Paul. He is mentioned earlier in the letter in Colossians 1:7 and 4:12, where Paul describes him as a “faithful minister of Christ” and a “fellow servant.”

Zeal for others:The verse highlights Epaphras’ zeal, his fervent and passionate concern, for the believers in Colossae, as well as those in Laodicea and Hierapolis. His zeal demonstrates his deep love and commitment to the spiritual well-being of these communities. Epaphras was actively engaged in ministry, laboring for the growth and maturity of the believers.

The significance of Laodicea and Hierapolis:Laodicea and Hierapolis were neighbouring cities close to Colossae. Epaphras had a heart not only for the believers in his own church but also for those in the surrounding regions. His love and concern extended beyond his immediate community, reflecting the broader scope of his ministry.

Application:There are several lessons we can draw from Colossians 4:13:

  • Zeal for others:Epaphras serves as an example for us in showing genuine concern and fervor for the spiritual welfare of others. It challenges us to examine our own level of commitment and engagement in ministering to others.
  • Expanding our vision:Epaphras’ concern extended beyond his own community. Similarly, we should broaden our perspective and be mindful of the needs of believers in neighbouring communities and even beyond. This encourages us to actively engage in supporting and uplifting other churches and believers.
  • Faithful service:Epaphras is described as a faithful minister. We can learn from his dedication and faithfulness in serving the Lord and His people. It reminds us of the importance of faithfulness in our own ministry, whatever form it may take.
  • Loving others sacrificially:Epaphras’ zeal demonstrates sacrificial love. It challenges us to love others selflessly and sacrificially, investing our time, resources, and energy in helping others grow spiritually.

Overall, Colossians 4:13 highlights the zeal and love exhibited by Epaphras for the believers in Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis. It serves as an encouragement and a challenge for us to develop a similar passion for the spiritual well-being of others, expanding our vision and faithfully serving the body of Christ.
