Colossians 4:12
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Colossians 4:12 (KJV)
Context
In the closing greetings of Paul’s letter, Epaphras is introduced as a fellow believer and servant of Christ. Described as “one of you,” he shared the same community as the Colossian Christians. He is also identified in Colossians 1:7 as a faithful minister of Christ, which clarifies his role and connection to the church.
Meaning
The phrase “a servant of Christ” signifies not only Epaphras’ general status as a believer but also his specific role as a preacher of the Gospel. The verse commends him for his unwavering dedication to prayer. The phrase “always labouring fervently for you in prayers” underscores the intensity and persistence of his intercessory life. The Greek word for “labouring fervently” conveys intense striving, even to the point of agony, as he wrestled in prayer for the Colossian believers.
Epaphras’ prayers had a clear purpose: that the Colossians “may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.” This reveals his desire for their spiritual maturity and growth. The expression “stand perfect and complete” conveys a state of spiritual maturity, stability, and readiness. Epaphras prayed that the believers would not only increase in knowledge but also remain steadfast and firm in their commitment to God.
Biblical connections
The context of the letter, addressing false teachings, suggests that such prayer is vital for standing firm in the truth. Epaphras’ example challenges believers to be devoted to prayer for the spiritual welfare of others, trusting that God works through such prayers to bring about maturity and steadfastness.
Application
This verse underscores the importance of persistent, fervent prayer for fellow believers, especially for their growth in Christ. It also highlights the value of knowing and being known by the community of faith, as Epaphras’ identity as “one of you” grounds his ministry in relationship. Faithful service includes intercessory prayer, not just outward ministry.
Reflection
Consider how you can labor fervently in prayer for your brothers and sisters in Christ, that they may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
