Colossians 4:17

And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.

Colossians 4:17 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians to address false teachings and to emphasize the supremacy of Christ. In the closing remarks, he gives specific instructions to individuals within the church, including a man named Archippus. Paul’s words to him are brief but weighty.

Archippus is mentioned only here in the New Testament, and little is known about him. He is also named in Philemon 1:2, where Paul calls him a “fellowsoldier,” indicating he was a Christian worker. He was likely a member of the Colossian church, possibly serving in a leadership or ministerial role. Some have speculated that he was the son of Philemon and Apphia, but this is uncertain.

Paul’s instruction to “take heed” means to be attentive, watchful, and diligent. The Greek word used for ministry is “diakonian,” which refers to the office of ministering in divine things, though the precise office is not certain. The phrase “received in the Lord” indicates that this ministry was a task or vocation given by the Lord himself, not something Archippus had chosen for himself. The command to “fulfil” it suggests the need for endurance, commitment, and faithfulness in carrying out the work God has assigned.

The message is delivered through the church, as Paul says “say to Archippus,” which may indicate a public exhortation. The reason for this admonition is not stated; whether Archippus was facing tiredness, discouragement, apathy, or distraction is unknown. The focus is on the command itself: to pay attention to the ministry and to fulfill it, not to wander away into other things.

Though this verse was originally addressed to Archippus, it carries relevance for all believers today:

  • Discovering and acknowledging our ministry: Just as Archippus had received a ministry, we, too, are called to serve in God’s kingdom. It is essential to seek God’s guidance and discover the specific gifts, talents, and areas of service He has equipped us for. Once identified, we must acknowledge and accept the responsibility with humility and gratitude.

  • Diligence and faithfulness: Taking heed to our ministry implies being diligent and faithful in carrying out the tasks and responsibilities entrusted to us. We should approach our service with a sense of purpose and commitment, knowing that our labour is not in vain in the Lord.

  • Endurance and perseverance: Paul’s exhortation to fulfill the ministry implies that challenges, obstacles, and discouragement may arise along the way. However, we are called to persevere, relying on God’s strength, grace, and guidance. Through His power, we can overcome difficulties and continue to fulfill our ministry.

  • Accountability: Archippus received this instruction publicly, suggesting the importance of accountability within the body of Christ. It is beneficial to have fellow believers who can encourage, support, and hold us accountable in fulfilling our ministry. Likewise, we should be willing to provide the same support to others.

Paul’s words to Archippus remind us that every believer has received a ministry from the Lord. The call to “take heed” and “fulfil” is not optional but a solemn responsibility. As we serve, we can trust that God, who gave the ministry, will also provide the strength to complete it. Let us examine our own hearts and ask: Are we paying attention to the ministry God has given us? Are we committed to fulfilling it faithfully, relying on His grace?
