2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, his young protégé and fellow worker in the ministry, urging him to remain faithful and diligent despite challenges and opposition. This instruction comes as a remedy for doctrinal disputes, which often arise from a desire for human applause rather than God’s approval.

The word “Study” translates the Greek spoudason, meaning to make an effort, be diligent, or be zealous. It calls for a disciplined approach to Scripture—reading, meditating, and reflecting on it actively. The goal is to “shew thyself approved unto God,” seeking His approval rather than human praise. Those who seek to please men are not servants of Christ; instead, we present ourselves to God with fidelity and uprightness, speaking His word sincerely as in His sight.

The diligent student is described as “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” A skilled worker performs with precision and produces good results. Likewise, believers are to handle the Word with accuracy and faithfulness, so that we will not be ashamed before God or others.

“Rightly dividing the word of truth” comes from orthotomounta, meaning to cut straight or handle correctly, like a workman cutting a straight line. This emphasizes accurate interpretation and teaching, especially in contrast to false teachers who misapply and undermine the truth. By rightly dividing the Word, we discern truth from error and apply it effectively in our lives.

We are called to be diligent students of the Bible, not passive readers. This means setting aside time to study, meditating on what we read, and seeking to understand its message accurately. Our aim is to please God, not to impress others with our knowledge. As we handle the Word correctly, we grow in discernment and become workmen who need not be ashamed.

Consider your own approach to Scripture. Are you studying with the same care and precision as a skilled workman? Do you seek God’s approval above all else? Let this verse challenge you to commit to faithful study and accurate handling of the Word, so that you may stand before God without shame.
