Listen to this article

For wee haue great ioy and consolation in thy loue, because the bowels of the Saints are refreshed by thee, brother. Philemon 1:7 (KJV)

Context:

The book of Philemon is a brief letter written by the Apostle Paul to Philemon, a Christian who owned a slave named Onesimus. Onesimus had run away, encountered Paul during his imprisonment, and, after his conversion, became a valuable helper to Paul. In this letter Paul urges Philemon to receive Onesimus back as a brother in Christ and to extend forgiveness for his past actions.

Joy and Consolation in Love:

Paul expresses great joy and consolation that flow from Philemon’s love. The love Philemon shows toward fellow believers brings comfort and encouragement not only to Paul but to the wider body of saints. This underscores love as a central, powerful force in the Christian faith that can uplift the hearts of those who receive it.

Refreshing the Bowels of the Saints:

The phrase “the bowels of the saints” refers to the innermost affections and emotions of believers. Paul commends Philemon for refreshing, or reviving, these deep feelings through his acts of kindness, hospitality, and genuine love. Such actions provide spiritual refreshment and encouragement, demonstrating how love can revitalize the faith journey of others.

Brotherly Relationship:

Paul addresses Philemon as “brother,” highlighting the deep bond that exists among believers in Christ. Early Christian community life emphasized brotherhood and sisterhood, viewing all members as part of one family. This relationship transcends blood ties and calls each believer to treat one another as family, fostering unity within the body of Christ.

Practical Applications:

  • Love brings joy and consolation: When we demonstrate sincere love toward fellow believers, we experience the same joy and comfort that Paul describes.
  • Acts of kindness refresh others: Hospitality, encouragement, and compassionate deeds have the power to revive the hearts of those around us.
  • Embrace the familial bond: View every Christian as a brother or sister, nurturing relationships that reflect the love of Christ.
  • Cultivate a loving attitude: Seek opportunities to show kindness and generosity, allowing your actions to bring encouragement to the community.
  • Be a source of refreshment: Offer words of encouragement, extend hospitality, and show compassion to those in need, thereby revitalizing their faith.
  • Foster unity within the Christian community: Embrace the concept of brotherhood, working toward harmonious relationships that display Christ’s love.

May this study of Philemon 1:7 deepen your understanding of the significance of love, the refreshing effect it has on believers, and the vital importance of brotherly relationships within the Christian faith.
