Listen to this article

“Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;”

Background:The book of Philemon is a personal letter written by the Apostle Paul to Philemon, a wealthy Christian residing in Colossae. Paul writes this letter to appeal to Philemon to receive back his runaway slave, Onesimus, who had become a Christian while in Rome.

Love and Faith:In this verse, Paul commends Philemon for his love and faith. Love and faith are two central themes in Christianity. Love refers to the selfless, sacrificial love that believers are called to demonstrate, both towards God and fellow believers. Faith refers to trust and reliance on God and His promises.

Love toward the Lord Jesus:Philemon’s love is directed toward the Lord Jesus. This implies a deep affection, devotion, and loyalty to Christ. It suggests that Philemon’s love for Jesus motivates his actions and attitudes towards others, including Onesimus.

Love toward all saints:Philemon’s love extends not only to Christ but also to all saints, meaning all fellow believers. This demonstrates the importance of cultivating a loving and compassionate attitude towards other Christians. It emphasizes the unity and community of believers in Christ.

Faith toward the Lord Jesus:Philemon’s faith is not only directed toward Jesus but is also rooted in Him. It signifies his trust in Christ’s redemptive work, His teachings, and His authority. Philemon’s faith in Jesus is the foundation for his actions and decisions.

Application:Philemon 1:5 challenges believers to examine their own love and faith. Are we demonstrating genuine love and selflessness towards fellow believers? Are our actions motivated by our love for Christ? Is our faith firmly rooted in Jesus and influencing our attitudes towards others?

  • Conclusion:Philemon 1:5 highlights the interconnectedness of love, faith, and Christian relationships. It encourages believers to cultivate a deep love for Jesus, which should overflow into love for all fellow believers. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of living out our faith in tangible ways, treating others with love and compassion as a reflection of our love for Christ.

Remember to read the entire book of Philemon to gain a deeper understanding of the context and the message Paul conveys in this letter.
