Hebrews 3:6

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Hebrews 3:6 (KJV)

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and considering turning back to their former Jewish religious practices. The author aims to demonstrate the superiority of Christ and the new covenant over the old covenant. In the preceding verses, Moses is described as faithful as a servant in God’s house; now Christ is presented as faithful as a Son over God’s house.

Christ is the Son who is in charge of His own house. The “house” refers to the people of God—the community of believers who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. This emphasizes Christ’s authority and leadership in the spiritual household of God. His sonship is not by creation, adoption, or office, but by nature, indicating His deity and equality with God. This sonship is the foundation of His authority over the house.

The verse goes on to explain that we, as believers, are part of Christ’s house. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we become members of God’s family and are adopted as His children. This shows the intimate relationship and close connection we have with God through Christ. The imagery of a house conveys that God dwells within His people.

The verse also emphasizes the responsibility of believers to hold fast to their faith. The Greek term “parrhesia,” translated “confidence,” suggests boldness or openness before God, and “kauchema,” translated “rejoicing,” indicates a holy pride or joy in our hope. This confidence and rejoicing in the hope of our salvation should be firm and unwavering. The condition “if we hold fast” is not a suggestion but a vital exhortation to enduring faith, linking our identity as God’s house to our perseverance in confidence and hope.

Hebrews 3:6 encourages believers to stand firm in their faith and remain confident in the hope they have in Christ. It reminds us that we are part of Christ’s household, and as such, we have a responsibility to hold fast to our faith and remain committed to following Him, even in the face of trials and persecution.
