Hebrews 10:2
“For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and the temptation to turn away from their faith in Christ. The author emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ and His work as the perfect sacrifice, contrasting it with the Old Testament sacrificial system.
Sacrificial System:In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to offer animal sacrifices as a temporary means of atonement for their sins. These sacrifices had to be continually offered because they were not capable of permanently removing sin or cleansing the conscience of the worshipper.
Superiority of Christ’s Sacrifice:The verse begins by suggesting that if the animal sacrifices were truly effective, they would have ceased to be offered. The reason is that if the blood of bulls and goats could completely cleanse the conscience of the worshippers, there would be no need for repetitive sacrifices. However, the repetition of these sacrifices reminded the worshippers of their sins, as their consciences were not truly cleansed.
The Once Purged:The verse continues by highlighting the superior work of Jesus Christ. The phrase the worshippers once purged refers to the believers who have received the cleansing of their sins through faith in Christ’s sacrifice. Unlike the animal sacrifices, Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient to purify once and for all. His sacrifice on the cross provided full atonement for sins, completely removing guilt and granting believers forgiveness.
No More Conscience of Sins:The verse concludes by stating that those who have been purged by Christ’s sacrifice should have no more conscience of sins. This means that believers, having received the forgiveness and cleansing through Christ, should no longer carry a burden of guilt or be haunted by the remembrance of their past sins. The sacrifice of Jesus brings complete freedom from guilt and shame, providing assurance of forgiveness and a clear conscience before God.
Overall, Hebrews 10:2 highlights the insufficiency of the Old Testament sacrificial system and emphasizes the superiority of Christ’s sacrifice. Through His atoning work, believers are cleansed of their sins, experiencing freedom from guilt and a restored relationship with God.
