Hebrews 10:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and were tempted to return to their old religious practices. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Christ and His sacrifice compared to the Old Testament sacrificial system.

The law as a shadow:In this verse, the author describes the law of the Old Testament as having a “shadow” of the good things to come. The law was a foreshadowing or a prefiguring of the reality that was to be revealed in Christ. The Old Testament sacrificial system, including the offering of animals, was a temporary provision pointing forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

Insufficiency of sacrifices:The author makes it clear that the sacrifices offered year by year under the law were unable to make the worshippers perfect. The repeated animal sacrifices could not provide complete forgiveness of sins or true spiritual transformation. They served as a temporary means of atonement but lacked the power to permanently cleanse the conscience of sin.

The need for a perfect sacrifice:The verse highlights the necessity of a better sacrifice that can bring perfection. The sacrifices offered in the Old Testament were limited and imperfect because they required repetition, and their efficacy was limited to ceremonial purification. The ultimate solution to sin and the fulfilment of the law would be found in Jesus Christ, who would offer Himself once and for all as the perfect sacrifice.

Application:The message of Hebrews 10:1 encourages believers to place their faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It reminds us that the Old Testament sacrificial system, while important in its time, was incomplete and temporary. In Christ, we have a superior sacrifice that can truly cleanse us from sin and make us perfect before God.

Overall, Hebrews 10:1 teaches us about the insufficiency of the Old Testament sacrifices and points us to the superior sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It emphasises the need for faith in Christ as the means of attaining true perfection and forgiveness of sins.
