“This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on James 3:15 (KJV) says, “This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it is important to consider its context. The book of James is a letter written by James, the half-brother of Jesus, to Jewish Christians. In this letter, James emphasizes the practical aspects of living out the Christian faith and addresses various issues faced by the early believers.

The Source of Wisdom:James starts by stating that the wisdom he is referring to does not come from above. In the previous verses (James 3:13-14), he discusses the importance of wise conduct and good behavior, highlighting that true wisdom is demonstrated through deeds done in humility and meekness. Here, James contrasts this true wisdom with another kind of wisdom that is not of divine origin.

Earthly Wisdom:James describes the alternative wisdom as “earthly.” This implies that it is limited to the earthly realm and is devoid of heavenly insight. Earthly wisdom can be characterised by selfish motives, human ambition, and a focus on temporal gains. It is concerned with worldly success, recognition, and material possessions.

Sensual Wisdom:James further labels this wisdom as “sensual” or “natural.” This implies that it is driven by the natural desires and inclinations of human nature, rather than being guided by the Spirit of God. Sensual wisdom is driven by human appetites, emotions, and instincts, often leading to self-indulgence and sinful behaviour.

Devilish Wisdom:James goes on to describe this false wisdom as “devilish.” This means that it aligns with the nature and character of the devil, who is the enemy of God and seeks to oppose His purposes. Devilish wisdom promotes deception, division, and discord. It leads to actions that are contrary to God’s will and can even be used as a tool by the devil to deceive and mislead people.

Discerning True Wisdom:By contrasting true wisdom with its counterfeit, James encourages believers to discern the source of the wisdom they receive and act upon. True wisdom, as outlined in the following verses (James 3:16-18), is marked by purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, impartiality, and sincerity. It is the wisdom that comes from God and is nurtured through a relationship with Him.

In summary, James 3:15 warns against a counterfeit wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and devilish. Instead, believers are called to seek and embody true wisdom that comes from God and produces godly characteristics in their lives. By understanding the distinction between these two types of wisdom, believers can make wise choices and pursue a life that aligns with God’s will.
