James 3:14

Listen to this article

“But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.”

Context:The Book of James is a practical letter that emphasizes the importance of living out one’s faith in everyday life. James addresses various topics, including trials, wisdom, faith, and controlling the tongue. In James 3:14, he specifically focuses on the negative attitudes of bitter envying and strife.

Bitter Envying:The term “bitter envying” refers to a resentful or jealous attitude. It implies a deep‑rooted discontentment and a desire for what others possess, which can lead to bitterness and strife. James warns believers against harboring such feelings in their hearts.

Strife:Strife refers to conflicts, disputes, or contention. It involves discord and a lack of peace. When bitter envying exists, it often leads to strife as individuals become focused on their own desires and interests, disregarding the well‑being and unity of the community.

Warning against Boasting:James advises believers not to “glory not” or boast in their bitter envying and strife. Boasting in such negative attitudes is contrary to the teachings of Christ and can damage relationships and the reputation of the Church.

Lying against the Truth:James cautions against lying against the truth. When individuals indulge in bitter envying and strife, they are contradicting the truth of God’s Word, which calls for love, humility, and unity among believers. Such behavior distorts the Gospel message and misrepresents the character of God.

  • Guard against envy and strife:James reminds believers to examine their hearts and address any bitter envying or strife within them. Envy and strife are harmful to personal relationships and the unity of the Church. Instead, we should seek to cultivate love, contentment, and a spirit of cooperation.
  • Seek the truth:Rather than lying against the truth by engaging in bitter envying and strife, believers are called to align their attitudes and actions with God’s Word. Embracing the truth means pursuing humility, love, and peace, which reflect the character of Christ.
  • Practice humility and gratitude:To counteract envy, cultivate a spirit of gratitude for what God has provided and rejoice with others in their blessings. Humility helps us recognize that all good things come from God and fosters a healthier perspective on our own desires and ambitions.
  • Pursue reconciliation:When conflicts arise, strive for peace and pursue reconciliation. Seek forgiveness and offer forgiveness to others, demonstrating the transformative power of Christ’s love in our relationships.
  • Remember the gospel:Ultimately, bitter envying and strife contradict the transformative message of the gospel. As believers, we are called to represent Christ’s love, grace, and unity to the world. Let our attitudes and actions reflect the truth of the gospel, leading others to the redemptive power of Christ.

In summary, James 3:14 serves as a reminder to guard our hearts against bitter envying and strife, embracing the truth of God’s Word, and living out the transformative message of the gospel in our relationships and interactions with others.
