James 3:15
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
James 3:15 (KJV)
Context
James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote this letter to Jewish Christians scattered abroad. He repeatedly calls them to live out their faith in practical, visible ways. In the verses just before this one, James urges believers to show wisdom through good conduct, humility, and meekness, and he warns against bitter envying and strife in the heart. Verse 15 then identifies the source of that envy and strife: it is a wisdom that does not come down from above.
Meaning
James declares plainly, “This wisdom descendeth not from above.” The word “descendeth” pictures something coming down from God, the giver of every good gift. The wisdom James condemns has no heavenly origin. Instead, he marks it with three words that expose its true character.
First, it is “earthly.” This wisdom is limited to the present world and its values. It focuses on temporal gains, human recognition, and material success. It cannot see beyond the horizon of this life, and so it makes decisions without reference to eternity or to God’s will.
Second, it is “sensual,” or natural. The Greek word here points to the soul-life of fallen humanity, the realm of natural appetites, emotions, and instincts. This wisdom is not guided by the Spirit of God; it is driven by self-will and self-indulgence. It may appear clever or shrewd, but it remains unspiritual at its core.
Third, it is “devilish.” This is the strongest word. It means that such wisdom aligns with the character and purposes of the devil. It promotes deception, division, and discord. It can even be used as a tool to mislead people, because it mimics true wisdom while opposing God’s ways.
Application
This verse calls every believer to examine the source of the wisdom they are following. If our actions are marked by envy, selfish ambition, or a contentious spirit, we are not operating in the wisdom of God. We may display learning, logic, and persuasive skill, yet still be guided by a wisdom that is earthly and unspiritual. Honest self-examination leads us to turn from such a spirit and to seek the wisdom that comes down from the Father of lights.
Reflection
True wisdom is not measured by cleverness or success but by its origin and its fruit. A wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and devilish will always lead away from God. The wisdom from above, however, is pure and peaceable, and it draws us closer to the One who gives it. Let us ask God to expose any counterfeit wisdom in our hearts and to fill us with His own wisdom, so that our lives may bear the fruit of righteousness.
