1 Peter 1:12

Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

1 Peter 1:12 (KJV)

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to instruct believers who were facing persecution and trials. In this passage, he encourages them to remain steadfast in their faith despite these challenges. He strengthens their resolve by highlighting the profound privilege they enjoy as recipients of the gospel. This salvation was carefully planned by God and anticipated throughout history.

The phrase “unto whom it was revealed” points to the prophets of the Old Testament who received revelations from God. These prophets, inspired by the Holy Spirit, spoke and wrote about the coming Messiah. However, they received a divine revelation that “not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things“. They did not fully understand the complete significance of their own prophecies. Instead, their prophetic ministry was meant for the benefit of future generations, including the early believers Peter addresses and Christians today.

Peter then explains that these profound truths “are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you“. This refers to the apostles and messengers who proclaimed the fulfillment of those ancient prophecies. They did not preach merely by human wisdom. They were empowered “with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven“. The Holy Spirit enabled them to declare the good news and testify about Jesus Christ, emphasizing the supreme divine authority of their message.

The verse concludes with a breathtaking reality regarding “which things the angels desire to look into“. This emphasizes the profound nature of the gospel. The angels, despite their heavenly position, do not fully comprehend the depths of God’s redemptive plan. They marvel at the grace bestowed upon humanity through Jesus Christ and long to gaze into the mysteries of this great salvation.

By understanding that their salvation is the culmination of prophetic history, delivered by the Holy Spirit, and a subject of angelic awe, believers can recognize the unparalleled value of what they have received in Christ.

  • Value and study the prophecies of the Old Testament, recognizing their significance in revealing God’s plan of salvation.

  • Share the gospel with others relying on the empowering work of the Holy Spirit, just as the early messengers did.

  • Approach the gospel with humility and awe, recognizing that even the angels are captivated by its beauty and depth.

  • Seek to deepen your understanding of God’s redemptive work and grow in gratitude for His grace.
