“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.”

Context:The Apostle Peter wrote this letter to the Christians who were scattered throughout Asia Minor, providing encouragement and guidance in the face of persecution. In this particular verse, Peter emphasises the example of Christ’s suffering and calls believers to follow in His footsteps.

Calling to Suffering:Peter begins by reminding the readers that they were called to suffer. The Christian life is not exempt from hardship and trials, but it is a part of the calling. The followers of Christ are called to endure suffering in a manner that reflects Christ’s character.

Christ’s Example:Peter highlights that Christ suffered for us. Jesus willingly endured immense suffering, even to the point of death on the cross, as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this out of love and obedience to the Father. Christ’s suffering had a redemptive purpose, providing forgiveness and salvation to all who believe in Him.

Following His Steps:Peter encourages believers to follow the example set by Christ. We are called to imitate His character, His humility, His selflessness, and His sacrificial love. Just as Christ suffered for us, we are to be willing to endure suffering for the sake of righteousness and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Application:This verse challenges us to examine our lives and consider whether we are truly following in Christ’s footsteps. Are we willing to endure suffering and hardships for the sake of righteousness? Are we imitating Christ’s character in our daily lives? It reminds us that our response to suffering should be rooted in Christ’s example of love, forgiveness, and faithfulness.

  • Encouragement:While suffering may be a part of our Christian journey, we can find comfort and encouragement knowing that Christ Himself has experienced suffering and can empathise with us. In our trials, we can draw strength from His example and rely on His grace to sustain us.

Overall, 1 Peter 2:21 calls us to embrace the reality of suffering in the Christian life, while reminding us of the redemptive example set by Christ. By following His steps, we can navigate through difficulties with faith, love, and endurance, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.
