2 Peter 3:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heauens were of olde, and the earth standing out of the water, and in the water, 2 Peter 3:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: The letter is traditionally attributed to the apostle Peter, who wrote it near the end of his life. Many scholars, however, view the epistle as pseudonymous and likely composed after Peter’s death. Peter addresses this epistle to believers who have obtained precious faith through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ, urging them to remember the teachings of the apostles and to be alert to false teachers who would arise.

Understanding the Verse: In this verse Peter addresses those who deliberately ignore or deny the truth about God’s creation. He points out that these individuals “purposefully forget” that “by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth stood out of the water, and in water.”

  • a. The Word of God: Peter emphasizes the creative power of God’s spoken word. In Genesis 1 God spoke and brought the universe into existence—calling forth light, separating the waters from the sky, and forming the earth. The scoffers choose to disregard this truth.
  • b. The Heavens Were of Old: Peter refers to the ancient origin of the heavens, indicating that the sky and celestial bodies were established by God’s creative act long ago.
  • c. The Earth Standing Out of the Water and in the Water: This phrase relates to the creation account in Genesis 1:9‑10, where God gathered the waters into one place, allowing dry land to appear. The “water” likely signifies the primordial waters that covered the early earth before land and sea were separated.

Overall Message: Peter highlights the willful ignorance of those who reject the truth of God’s creative power. These scoffers deny a divine Creator and consequently refuse to acknowledge His authority. He warns believers about false teachings and attitudes that may arise.

Application:

Awareness: Believers should be vigilant regarding teachings or philosophies that deny God’s creative power or question His authority over creation. Guarding against willful ignorance involves studying God’s Word and embracing its revealed truths.

Trust in God’s Word: Just as God’s spoken word brought the universe into being, His promises, guidance, and plans are trustworthy. Faith in Scripture should shape thoughts, decisions, and actions.

Engage in Study: The Bible encourages a deeper understanding of God’s creation and His Word. Through diligent study, believers gain insight into God’s character, creative power, and redemptive plan, equipping them to respond to challenges and false teachings with conviction. Consider the broader context of the passage and consult various Bible translations, commentaries, and church teachings to develop a comprehensive understanding of the text.
