1 John 4:17
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1 John 4:17 (KJV)
Context
In 1 John 4:17, the apostle John connects love with the believer’s relationship to God. He teaches that God’s perfect love empowers believers to have confidence in the day of judgment. The immediate context, especially the command to love one another as God has loved us (1 John 4:11), shows that this love is not abstract but is expressed in the Christian community.
Meaning
The verse begins with the phrase, “Herein is our love made perfect.” The Greek term indicates that love is brought to completion or maturity. This perfection of love is not achieved by human effort alone but through the love of God at work in believers. When we experience and embrace God’s love, it transforms us and enables us to love others more fully.
John then explains that the result of love being made perfect is boldness in the day of judgment. The Greek word for boldness, parrēsia, conveys confidence, openness, and freedom of speech. The day of judgment refers to the future time when all people will stand before God. Believers can approach that day with assurance, not because of personal merit, but because their sins are forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ and they are covered by His righteousness.
The verse concludes, “because as he is, so are we in this world.” This phrase points to the believer’s union with Christ and present standing. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His character and nature in this world. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are transformed to become more like Jesus, exhibiting His love, compassion, forgiveness, and righteousness in our daily lives.
Biblical connections
The following verse, 1 John 4:18, directly connects to this teaching: perfect love casts out fear, and the boldness of verse 17 is contrasted with the fear of punishment. This reinforces that the believer’s confidence rests on God’s love, not on self-assessment.
Application
This verse grounds Christian assurance in the reality of being in Christ. Because believers are united with Him, they can live with confidence rather than fear. The love that God has perfected in us becomes the basis for both our love toward others and our hope for the day of judgment.
Reflection
Consider how God’s love has been maturing in your life. The same love that gives you boldness for the future also shapes how you live today, calling you to reflect Christ’s character in this world.
