Revelation 1:16
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
Revelation 1:16 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the Apostle John’s vision of the glorified Christ, recorded while John was exiled on the island of Patmos. The vision presents Jesus in His exalted, heavenly state rather than in His earthly ministry, and it prepares the reader for the messages to the seven churches that follow.
Meaning
John first sees seven stars in Christ’s right hand. The right hand symbolizes strength and authority, and Revelation 1:20 explains that the seven stars are the angels, or messengers, of the seven churches. This image shows that Christ holds sovereign control over the spiritual leadership of His churches. The number seven often represents completeness or perfection in Scripture.
Next, a sharp two-edged sword comes out of His mouth. The Greek term used here, rhomphaia distomos oxeia, emphasizes a long, sharp, two-edged blade. This sword represents the Word of God, which is living and powerful, sharper than any physical sword. Its two-edged nature points to its penetrating power to convict, judge, and divide truth from error. Christ’s spoken word carries authority and judgment.
Finally, His countenance shines like the sun in its full strength. This comparison to the sun at midday conveys overwhelming divine glory and majesty. The radiant face of Christ reveals His divine nature and the brilliance of His presence.
Biblical connections
These three images together portray Christ as the sovereign Lord who holds authority over His church, whose word is a powerful instrument of judgment and truth, and whose glory is beyond compare. The vision establishes the identity of the One who speaks to John, preparing the reader for the letters to the seven churches.
Application
This verse reminds believers of Christ’s sovereignty, His role as Judge, and the power of His word. It encourages submission to His authority, attentive listening to His teachings, and reverence for His divine presence. Christ holds His church’s leaders in His hand, and His word discerns the hearts of all.
Reflection
Consider the awe that John must have felt at this sight. The same risen Christ who holds the stars and speaks with a sharp sword also shines with the glory of the sun. Believers today can take comfort that this powerful Lord governs His church with perfect wisdom and will one day bring all things into judgment.
