Revelation 1:20

Listen to this article

“The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.”

This verse is part of the introductory chapter of the book of Revelation, where the apostle John receives a vision from Jesus Christ while exiled on the island of Patmos. In this vision, Jesus instructs John to write down what he sees and sends specific messages to seven churches in Asia Minor.

In verse 20, Jesus explains to John the meaning of two important symbols: the seven stars and the seven golden candlesticks. These symbols are central to understanding the messages that follow in the subsequent chapters.

The Seven Stars:Jesus tells John that the seven stars he saw in His right hand represent the angels of the seven churches. The term “angel” here is commonly understood to refer to the messengers or leaders of the respective churches. It is important to note that there is some debate about the precise meaning of “angel” in this context, as it could also refer to heavenly beings or spiritual guardians associated with the churches. However, the prevailing interpretation suggests that it refers to human leaders or messengers.

The Seven Golden Candlesticks:Jesus explains that the seven candlesticks John saw correspond to the seven churches themselves. The candlestick was an essential element in the Old Testament tabernacle and temple worship, symbolizing the light of God’s presence. In this context, the candlesticks represent the churches as the bearers of God’s light and truth in the world.

The symbolism in this verse emphasizes the connection between the messengers or leaders of the churches and the churches themselves. The stars, representing the messengers, are held in Jesus’ right hand, signifying His authority and care over them. The candlesticks, symbolizing the churches, reflect their responsibility to shine the light of God’s truth and represent His presence in the world.

Overall, Revelation 1:20 sets the stage for the messages Jesus will convey to each of the seven churches in the subsequent chapters of the book. These messages contain commendations, warnings, and exhortations tailored to the unique situations and challenges faced by each church. The symbolism of the stars and candlesticks serves as a reminder that Jesus intimately knows and cares for His church and its leaders, holding them accountable for their faithfulness in fulfilling their purpose.
