Revelation 2:1
“Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;”
Context:The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, is a prophetic vision given to him by Jesus Christ. It provides insights into the future and unveils the events leading up to Christ’s return and the establishment of God’s kingdom.
Addressing the angel of the church of Ephesus:Ephesus was a significant city in the Roman province of Asia, known for its cultural and commercial importance. The church in Ephesus was likely a prominent and influential congregation.
“These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand”:Jesus introduces Himself as the speaker of the message to the church. He identifies Himself as the one who holds the seven stars in His right hand. In Revelation 1:20, Jesus explains that the seven stars represent the angels of the seven churches, indicating His authority and control over them.
“Who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks”:Jesus further describes Himself as the one who walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks. In Revelation 1:20, the seven golden candlesticks are identified as the seven churches. This imagery suggests Jesus’ presence and intimate knowledge of the state of each church.
Overall, this verse sets the stage for the specific message that Jesus wants to convey to the church in Ephesus. It emphasises His authority, control, and intimate knowledge of the state of the church. This introduction also indicates that Jesus is actively involved in the affairs of the church, walking amidst His people and overseeing their spiritual well‑being.
Studying the subsequent verses and the entire letter to the church in Ephesus (Revelation 2:2-7) would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the specific commendations and admonitions Jesus had for this particular congregation.
