Revelation 2:14
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
Revelation 2:14 (KJV)
Context
Jesus addresses the church in Pergamos, a city known for its pagan worship and idolatry. He commends their faith and perseverance, yet He also holds a rebuke against them: they tolerate those who hold the doctrine of Balaam.
Meaning
The doctrine of Balaam refers to the counsel Balaam gave to Balak, the Moabite king, when he was hired to curse Israel. God prevented Balaam from pronouncing curses and instead compelled him to bless the Israelites. Yet Balaam then advised Balak to use seductive tactics to entice Israel into sin. The Greek word for stumblingblock is “skandalon,” meaning a trap or offense that causes someone to fall. Balaam’s counsel was a trap with two specific snares: eating things sacrificed unto idols and committing fornication. These actions led Israel astray from their covenant with God and brought judgment upon them.
Biblical connections
The Old Testament account of Balaam in Numbers 22-24 and 31:16 shows how he taught Balak to cast this stumblingblock before the children of Israel. The same spiritual dangers persist in the New Testament church, as Christ’s warning to Pergamos demonstrates. The issue is not that the church itself followed this doctrine, but that they had people within their fellowship who held to it, compromising the holiness of the church and causing others to stumble.
Application
This passage warns believers today against compromising their faith and tolerating false teachings and practices within the community. By allowing those who hold to the doctrine of Balaam to remain in their midst, the church risks spiritual compromise and moral corruption. Christians are called to uphold the truth and stand firm against any false doctrines or sinful behaviors that undermine their relationship with God.
Reflection
Christ’s admonition to Pergamos applies to all believers in every age. He calls for repentance and vigilance, urging His people to distance themselves from those who promote ungodly teachings and practices. The presence of such teaching is a serious matter in Christ’s eyes, warranting a direct rebuke. Believers are to maintain fidelity to God’s Word, discern against influences that lead away from His truth, and pursue holiness in their walk with Him.
