Revelation 2:15

So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. Revelation 2:15 (KJV)

Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and contains a series of letters written by the apostle John to seven churches in Asia Minor. These letters were given to John in a vision from Jesus Christ Himself. In this verse, John is addressing the church in Pergamos (also known as Pergamum).

The Nicolaitans: The verse mentions the Nicolaitans, a group or sect that held a particular doctrine. Unfortunately, there is limited information available about the Nicolaitans. The Bible does not provide detailed specifics about their beliefs or practices. However, based on the context of this verse and historical references, it is generally believed that they promoted compromise with pagan practices, especially those associated with idolatry and immorality.

Doctrine and Jesus’ perspective: The verse states that the church in Pergamos also had individuals who held the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. The mention of “doctrine” suggests that the Nicolaitans’ teachings had gained some influence within the church. However, Jesus makes it clear that He hates this particular teaching. This shows Jesus’ concern for the purity and holiness of His followers and His desire for them to remain faithful to the truth of His Word.

Application for believers: Although the specific details of the Nicolaitans’ teachings are not explicitly mentioned, the verse highlights Jesus’ strong disapproval of compromise with false teachings and ungodly practices. As believers today, we are called to discern and reject any teachings or practices that contradict the clear teachings of Scripture. We should strive to maintain our faithfulness to God’s Word and live lives that honour Him.
