Revelation 2:11

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Revelation 2:11 (KJV)

The book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains a series of visions and messages given to him by Jesus Christ, intended for the seven churches in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) and with broader application for the Church throughout history. This verse concludes Jesus’ message to the church in Smyrna, a congregation facing significant suffering and persecution.

The opening phrase, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches,” is a recurring call in Revelation 2–3. It urges spiritual attentiveness, showing that the message is not only for the first-century congregations but also for believers in every generation. The Spirit speaks to the churches collectively, making the instruction enduring.

The phrase “He that overcometh” refers to believers who remain faithful and steadfast despite trials, poverty, tribulation, persecution, or even the threat of death. This overcoming is accomplished through Christ, who enables the believer to be more than a conqueror over these challenges.

The “second death” is distinguished from physical death and refers to eternal separation from God and final judgment for those who reject Him. The promise that the overcomer “shall not be hurt” uses a strong Greek negation, emphasizing the certainty that the faithful believer will not be harmed by this eternal death. This assurance contrasts the temporary nature of physical suffering with the eternal security of those who remain faithful.

This verse encourages believers to have spiritual discernment and to heed the voice of the Holy Spirit. It reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to Christ and overcoming the challenges we face as followers of Jesus. The promise of not being hurt by the second death provides hope and assurance of eternal life with God for those who trust in Him.
