Revelation 2:11
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.”
Context:The book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains a series of visions and messages given to him by Jesus Christ, which were intended for the seven churches in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) and have broader application for the Church throughout history.
Addressing the churches:The verse begins by emphasising the importance of listening to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. The messages in Revelation were not only for the seven specific churches in the first century but are also applicable to believers in all generations.
The call to overcome:The phrase “He that overcometh” refers to believers who remain faithful and steadfast in their faith, despite facing various trials and challenges. In the preceding verses of Revelation 2, Jesus addresses specific issues within each church and encourages them to overcome their shortcomings.
The second death:The promise to those who overcome is that they will not be hurt by the second death. The second death is a term used in Revelation to describe eternal separation from God and final judgment for those who reject Him (Revelation 20:14-15). Therefore, this promise of not being hurt by the second death assures believers of their eternal security in Christ.
Application:This verse encourages believers to have spiritual discernment and to heed the voice of the Holy Spirit. It reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to Christ and overcoming the challenges we face as followers of Jesus. The promise of not being hurt by the second death provides hope and assurance of eternal life with God for those who trust in Him.
