Revelation 3:16

“So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic book that contains a series of messages given by Jesus to the seven churches in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). In this verse, Jesus is addressing the church in Laodicea, one of the seven churches.

Lukewarmness:Jesus uses the analogy of temperature to describe the spiritual condition of the believers in Laodicea. The city of Laodicea was known for its lukewarm water supply. The people in the city would understand the unpleasantness of drinking lukewarm water, and Jesus employs this metaphor to convey a spiritual truth.

These believers were complacent, self‑sufficient, and lacking in genuine zeal for God. Jesus finds their condition distasteful, comparing it to something that would cause Him to vomit.

Warning and Rebuke:Jesus issues a strong warning and rebuke to the church in Laodicea. He wants them to realise the seriousness of their spiritual condition. By using vivid imagery, He highlights the urgency for them to repent and turn back to a passionate and genuine faith.

Spue Thee Out:The phrase “I will spue thee out of my mouth” signifies Jesus’ rejection and disapproval. It implies that if the believers in Laodicea do not repent and change their ways, they will face severe consequences and be rejected by Him. The image of being spewed out of His mouth suggests complete rejection and separation from His presence.

Application:The message to the church in Laodicea serves as a timeless admonition for believers today. It challenges us to examine our own spiritual condition and evaluate whether we are wholeheartedly devoted to God or caught in a state of lukewarmness. It encourages us to cultivate genuine passion, fervour, and commitment to our faith, rather than becoming complacent or indifferent.

• Call to Repentance:Despite the strong rebuke, Jesus offers a way out. In the subsequent verses (Revelation 3:17‑19), He calls the Laodiceans to repentance and offers His love and counsel. He urges them to buy from Him gold refined in the fire, white garments to cover their spiritual nakedness, and eye salve to gain true spiritual insight.
