Revelation 3:15
I know thy workes, that thou art neither cold nor hot, I would thou wert cold or hot. Revelation 3:15 (KJV)
Revelation 3:15 belongs to the message addressed to the church in Laodicea, one of the seven churches recorded in the book of Revelation. In this verse Jesus Christ evaluates the spiritual condition of that congregation.
The metaphor of “cold” and “hot” draws on the local geography. Nearby cities enjoyed hot, healing mineral springs or cool, refreshing water, while Laodicea’s own supply was tepid, lukewarm water that was neither pleasant to drink nor useful for bathing. Jesus uses this familiar image to convey a spiritual truth.
Describing the Laodicean believers as “neither cold nor hot,” Jesus points to a state of lukewarmness—an attitude marked by indifference, compromise, and a lack of zeal or fervor for God. Their faith is neither passionately active nor clearly opposed, but merely tepid.
Jesus then declares a preference for them to be either cold or hot. This does not mean He desires spiritual coldness or opposition; rather, the contrast highlights the need for wholehearted devotion. Cold water can symbolize a clear, decisive stance—whether for righteousness or against sin—while hot water represents fervent passion and active service.
The following verses (Revelation 3:16‑17) warn of the consequences of remaining lukewarm. Because they are neither cold nor hot, Jesus says He will vomit (spue) them out of His mouth, a vivid illustration of the rejection that accompanies half‑hearted faith.
Nevertheless, Jesus extends an invitation to repentance. As Revelation 3:19 (KJV) records, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” He urges the Laodiceans to turn from their tepid condition and pursue a vibrant, passionate relationship with Him.
The lesson applies to believers today. Each person is called to examine his or her own spiritual temperature, rejecting complacency and embracing fervent love for God. We are urged to serve actively, live out our faith with passion, and maintain a zeal that reflects true devotion.
